Introduction to hockey
Hockey was first played in Canada in the 1800’s on frozen ponds and lakes. At that time, many people playing hockey used wooden tree sticks to hit a ball around and glued animal bones or long, sharp knives to their shoes for skates. In 1890, the first rules of hockey were introduced by college students in Montreal. Then in 1893, Canada’s supreme leader, Lord Stanley, introduced the Stanley cup. It started out only as big as a bowl and weighed a couple pounds, but today the Stanley cup weighs about 30 pounds and can fit a gallon of chocolate milk inside the bowl of the cup.
Every team has won the Stanley cup. Some more than once. But the Buffalo Sabres and the Vancouver Canucks have yet to win the Stanley cup. There are Amateur and college teams around the world. The main positions of the teams are the left and right defenders, goaltenders, Backup goaltenders, a couple coaches, left and right wingers, and the centers. There are also officials and referees that enforces rules and blowing their whistles when the puck goes out of bounds, breaking glass, penalties and violations like tripping, hooking, cross checking, arguing with the referees, icing, interference, body slams, although you can check people into the boards, and charging.A zamboni driver starts out by smoothing the ice. Then the players come on the ice and start playing.
The playing time is divided into three 20 minute periods, but the play stops during broken glass or equipment, penalties and violations, injuries, and pucks flying out of bounds, so a regular game can last 2-3 hours. The hockey hall of fame holds statues of every retired player that has been nominated to the hall of fame in Toronto. I can’t tell you everything about hockey in one article. To learn more, you can do some more research on this subject.
